Citations
Virza automatically extracts citations from uploaded documents and makes them available for export and cross-referencing.
Automatic citation extraction
When you upload a paper, Virza parses the references section and creates structured citation records:
- Title of the cited work
- Authors
- Year of publication
- Journal or conference
- DOI (when available)
Viewing citations
Open any document and scroll to the References section in the metadata panel to see all extracted citations.
Citation status
| Icon | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 🔗 Linked | This citation matches a document already in your library |
| 📄 External | This citation is for a paper not (yet) in your library |
Click a linked citation to jump directly to that document in your library.
Cross-referencing
Virza builds a citation graph across your entire library:
- See which of your documents cite each other
- Discover highly-cited papers in your collection
- Find shared references between papers
Access the citation graph from any document’s Related tab.
Exporting citations
Export citations in standard formats:
- BibTeX: For LaTeX users
- RIS: Compatible with Zotero, Mendeley, and other reference managers
- APA / MLA / Chicago: Copy formatted citation strings
To export: select documents → right-click → Export Citations → choose format.
Tips
- Upload the papers you cite: This builds a richer citation graph and makes cross-referencing more useful
- Check extracted citations: Automatic parsing is good but not perfect. Verify important citations manually.
- Use DOIs: Papers with DOIs get better citation matching across your library
